7 tips on how to sell yourself in an interview.

Posted by Tim VanHulle

As a salesperson, you're great at positioning the solution to the client's pain points. But what if you're selling yourself?

For the past few years I've seen salespeople who are excellent at their job, but blatantly fail during interviews. The main reasons are the lack of preparation & practice, the inability to find one's own Features, Advantages & Benefits and letting their emotions get the best of them.

7 tips on how to sell yourself in an interview.

"By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail."

Do you go to a prospect without properly preparing yourself?

The answer is most likely "no".

Do the same for interviews. Get to know the company, the person you're meeting and what their latest activities are. That way you'll be able to show your genuine interest in their business and challenges.

Ask questions

If you're going without the assistance of a recruiter, ask open questions to find out what the hiring manager's expectations & pain points are.

In case you're going through a recruiter, feel free to ask for this info. (S)he should know what the potential employer is looking for and which pain points they're trying to relieve.

Don't beg or come across as needy

When you're selling towards a prospect, you don't beg or push them into making a deal with you right? Well then you should act the same in an interview.

You can show your motivation but don't start screaming "Oh my god I want to start here immediately! Where do I sign?"

Check the business model

Get more info on the potential employer's business model and start mirror matching to the business model you're currently in. Give relevant examples on how you sold within that part of the business model to give a clear view on your capabilities.

Always Be Closing (ABC)

Remember the Always Be Closing. In a conversation with a prospect you close them at least 3-5 times with techniques like the "Now or Never", "Summary Close", FAB or - my favorite - the Assumptive Close.

Do the same during an interview! Show them that you have no issues closing the deal. Just make sure it comes across as natural and don't be stubborn if you get an objection.

Be transparent & honest

If your prospect asks you a question; you wouldn't lie, would you?

Same thing for interviews. Don't lie about your experience, or the reason why you left a company. Honesty goes a long way.

Sell in the Features, Advantages and Benefits

Once you have all the info you need on the job, the hiring manager, the company and ultimately the pain points for these 3; start selling in the FAB's.

Try to summarize the reason why you're the solution for their pain points.

Remember to remain selective in your search for the next career step. The techniques described above shouldn't just be used for selling yourself, but also for analyzing whether you should sell yourself.
